Composite deck – Cobham
A two-level composite deck in Toasted Sand, with a hot tub on the upper deck and a lower level stepping down towards the pergola and swing seat.
Draft note for Craig (delete this box before publishing). Only one finished photo is on this page so far. The other finished shots in the job folder are too large for the morning run to open and check, and there is no drawing for this job, only a site sketch. Add two or three more finished photos (nothing showing house numbers, faces or car plates) to the two-column block under “What we built”, then delete this box.
Scope
A rear garden in Cobham, with a tall evergreen hedge along the back and a pergola with a swing seat to one side. The job was a composite deck for a hot tub, on two levels, built to last and easy to look after.
- The hot tub. A heavy load that needs a level, solid deck under it.
- Two levels. An upper deck for the hot tub and a lower level that steps down towards the pergola.
- Ground contact. Timber that sits on or in the soil is what usually fails first on a deck, so the base had to keep the frame clear of it.
- Upkeep. No staining or oiling every year.
What we built
Finished in early October 2026.
- Base dug out so that no timber is in contact with the soil
- Frame of UC4 treated timber, rated for use in ground contact, set on composite posts
- Trex Enhance composite boards in Toasted Sand
- Boards fixed on hidden clips, so there are no screw heads on the surface
- Edge boards framing every side of both levels for a clean finish
- Upper deck for the hot tub, with a lower level stepping down towards the pergola and swing seat
The edge boards run round every side of both levels, so the cut ends of the boards are hidden and the step between the two levels reads as one clean line.
The result
- A level, solid base for the hot tub, with a second level for sitting out
- A frame kept clear of the soil, which is what makes a deck last
- A smooth surface with no screw heads, framed on every side
- No staining or oiling: composite needs only a wash down a couple of times a year
Planning a deck like this
Whether it is for a hot tub, a garden room or a sunny corner, most of what decides how long a deck lasts is under the boards: the base, the frame and how well it is kept off the soil. Our decking page covers the composite, hardwood and timber options we build with.
