Ongoing garden maintenance – Richmond

Restoring quality to a thoughtfully designed mature Richmond garden through tailored seasonal care, species-specific pruning and informed horticultural maintenance.

Initial conditions

This Richmond garden had originally been thoughtfully designed, but inconsistent maintenance over time had reduced its impact. Shrubs had grown beyond their intended scale, herbaceous borders were overcrowded and seasonal interest had begun to blur. The structure of the garden was still strong, yet without informed care the planting no longer performed as it once had.

Client brief

The homeowners were not looking for a redesign, but for knowledgeable, reliable garden maintenance that would restore health and keep the space looking its best throughout the year. They wanted horticultural expertise and seasonal understanding rather than occasional tidying or reactive visits.

Description of works

Approach

Maintenance was planned around plant requirements and seasonal timing rather than a fixed checklist. Spring visits focused on dividing congested perennials, soil improvement and lawn renovation. Pruning schedules were tailored to each species, ensuring flowering shrubs, climbers and evergreens were cut at the correct time to protect shape and encourage strong regrowth.

Autumn work prioritised plant health and long-term structure, with selective clearing that supported wildlife value rather than stripping the garden bare. The emphasis throughout was on steady, knowledgeable care that allowed the original design intent to re-emerge.

Interventions

Borders were carefully thinned and reorganised to improve spacing and airflow, lawns were overseeded and treated to restore colour and density, and climbers were retrained to regain even coverage along fences and walls. Any replacement planting was selected to remain consistent with the existing palette, maintaining continuity rather than introducing unrelated styles.

Results

Over the course of regular visits the garden regained clarity, balance and seasonal rhythm. Flowering became more consistent, structure returned to the borders and the overall space once again reflected the quality of its original design. The result was not a dramatic transformation, but a steady restoration: a healthier, calmer garden maintained through informed horticultural care rather than sporadic surface maintenance.
