The Flourish bulb list

Autumn 2026. Top-quality bulbs, supply only, chosen by gardeners who plant thousands of them every year.

We plant bulbs by the thousand every autumn in the gardens we design and look after across Kingston, Surbiton and Surrey, and we buy them from the same trade nursery we have trusted for years. This season we are opening the list to everyone. Same bulbs, same quality, no garden centre bags of tired, soft little things.

Hover over (or tap) any bulb for our honest opinion of it. Type the number of packs you want in the Packs box and the total adds up as you go, then send your order from the form at the bottom. Prices are per pack, including VAT, supply only, the minimum order is £150, and orders are ready in about two weeks. Want them planted as well? We can do that too.

Two ways to survive: a bulb’s life story

Fun fact 1: the canopy dodgers

Woodland bulbs live life in fast-forward. Snowdrops, wood anemones, bluebells, winter aconites, dog’s-tooth violets and trilliums leaf, flower and feed in late winter and spring, while sunlight still pours through bare branches. By the time the oaks, beeches and hazels above them leaf up and shade the floor, the job is done: food is packed away in the bulb and they disappear underground until next year.

In your garden: part shade suits them, 3 to 6 hours of direct sun or dappled light under deciduous trees and shrubs, in soil rich in leaf mould. Look for the green Beats the canopy badge.

Fun fact 2: the summer sleepers

Tulips, alliums, crocuses, irises, hyacinths and most daffodils come from places with wet winters and baking, bone-dry summers: the mountains of Central Asia, Turkey and the Mediterranean. A bulb is really a short, swollen stem wrapped in fleshy, succulent leaf bases, a packed lunch and a water bottle in one. They grow and flower while there is rain, then shut down and sleep through the heat until the autumn rains wake them.

In your garden: give them full sun, more than 6 hours of direct sun a day, and sharp drainage. They need bright spring light on their leaves to refill the bulb, and a warm, dry summer rest to form next year’s flower. In shade they come back smaller each year and often ‘blind’: plenty of leaf, no flower. On our Kingston and Surbiton clay add grit, because wet summer feet are what kill them. Look for the purple Sleeps through summer badge.

How much light? (RHS definitions, midsummer)

  • Full sun: more than 6 hours of direct sun a day.
  • Part shade: 3 to 6 hours of direct sun, or dappled light through deciduous trees.
  • Shade: less than 3 hours; under 2 hours is deep shade. Only the trilliums on this list like it there.

Every bulb’s card shows what it needs. Some, such as daffodils, grape hyacinths and camassias, are happy anywhere from full sun to part shade.

Snowdrops

The first flowers of the year, up before the trees have even thought about leaves.

Did you know?

Galanthus. The name means ‘milk flower’ in Greek. Plant dry bulbs 5 to 8 cm deep in autumn, or move clumps ‘in the green’ just after flowering. They like moist, leafy soil in dappled shade.

Woodland and shade bulbs

For the shady bits under trees and shrubs. They do all their living in spring, then vanish when the canopy closes.

Did you know?

Eranthis. Winter aconite tubers look like little dried twigs. Soak them overnight and plant 5 cm deep under deciduous shrubs.

Erythronium. Named dog’s-tooth for the shape of the bulb. The bulbs hate drying out, so plant them 10 to 15 cm deep the day they arrive, in cool, leafy soil.

Hyacinthoides. Our native bluebell is protected by law: it is an offence to dig wild bulbs for sale. Plant cultivated bulbs 8 to 10 cm deep, well away from Spanish bluebells, which cross with them.

Trillium. Everything comes in threes: three leaves, three sepals, three petals. Plant the rhizomes 5 to 8 cm deep in cool, moist, leafy shade and leave them undisturbed.

Tulips

The show-offs of spring. Most modern tulips flower best in their first year, so we plant fresh each autumn; the Darwin hybrids and species types are the best for coming back.

Did you know?

Tulipa. The name comes from the Turkish for turban. In the 1630s single Dutch tulip bulbs changed hands for more than the price of a house, and the prized ‘broken’ colours turned out to be caused by a virus.

Tulip tips from the Flourish team

Plant late. November into early December, once the soil is cold. Warm autumn soil is how tulip fire (Botrytis tulipae) gets a grip. Check every bulb as you plant and bin any that are soft, mouldy or speckled with small black spots.

Stop them rotting on clay. Kingston and Surbiton clay holds winter wet, and a tulip sitting in a puddle turns to mush. Dig the hole about 20 cm deep and fork the bottom so it does not hold water like a sump. Put in 2 to 3 cm of horticultural grit, sit the bulb on it pointed end up, and backfill with soil mixed with more grit. On very heavy or wet ground, use raised beds or pots of peat-free John Innes No. 2 with grit added.

Gardens with irrigation. Tulips are summer sleepers and want a dry rest from June to September. Keep them out of the wettest drip or sprinkler zones, or grow them in pots. Turn the zone down once the leaves have yellowed: the irrigation is for the summer perennials, not the sleeping bulbs. In a dry April, a drink while they are in growth is welcome.

Squirrels. Plant deep, firm the soil, and pick up any papery skins you drop, because they smell like dinner. Lay chicken wire flat over the planted area, peg it down, and take it off once the shoots are about 5 cm tall. In pots, lay mesh just under the compost surface. Skip the bonemeal: squirrels, foxes and dogs all love the smell.

If tulip fire strikes. Look for twisted, spotted, scorched-looking leaves in spring. Dig the plant out with its bulb and bin it, not the compost heap, and grow tulips somewhere else for at least three years.

Want them to come back? Most modern tulips are best treated as annuals and replanted fresh each autumn. For tulips that return, choose Darwin hybrids, Fosterianas and the small species types, plant deep, and let the leaves die down naturally. More in our spring bulbs guide.

Indoor bulbs

For windowsills and Christmas. Hippeastrum (indoor amaryllis) priced each on request.

Did you know?

Hippeastrum. What we call amaryllis is really Hippeastrum, from South America; the true Amaryllis comes from South Africa. Pot it with the top third of the bulb above the compost.

Prepared hyacinths. ‘Prepared’ means the bulbs have been chilled so they think winter has already passed, which is how they flower for Christmas.

Paperwhites. A splash of alcohol in their water keeps paperwhites shorter and stops them flopping, a trick tested by Cornell University researchers.

How to order

1. Choose your packs. Type the number of packs in the Packs box next to each bulb. The running total shows at the bottom of the screen. Minimum order £150 including VAT.

2. Send your order. Fill in your details in the order form and press Send my order. It opens an email to us with everything filled in; just press send. Prefer a form? Use our enquiry form and list the bulbs and packs you want.

3. We confirm. We check availability with the nursery, then confirm the total, including any delivery charge, before you pay. Allow two weeks from order to collection or delivery.

4. Plant them. Or let us. See our spring bulbs guide for depths, timings and squirrel defences, and our autumn planting guide for everything else that goes in this season.

Supply only, while stocks last, autumn 2026. Minimum order £150 including VAT. Allow two weeks from order to collection or delivery. Bulbs are natural products and varieties marked ‘or’ depend on what the nursery has; we will always tell you before anything is swapped. Tulips go in from November; most other bulbs from now. Colchicum, crown imperials and many bulbs are harmful if eaten, so keep them away from children and pets.
