Autumn lawn seeding and improvements

As summer fades into autumn, now is the time to give your lawn some much-needed care and attention. Cooler temperatures and increased rainfall make autumn the ideal season for lawn seeding and repair. Here’s everything you need to know to improve your lawn and ensure a lush, green landscape come next spring.

Why seed in autumn?

Seeding in autumn has several advantages:

  • Optimal temperatures: The soil is still warm from the summer, which helps grass seeds to germinate more quickly.

  • Natural moisture: Autumn's rainfall provides the water your lawn needs, reducing the need for frequent watering.

  • Less competition from weeds: Weeds tend to die back as the weather cools, giving your grass a better chance to establish itself.

Whether you’re filling in bare patches, overseeding to thicken your lawn, or starting from scratch, autumn is the perfect time to seed.

Lawn seeding basics

To ensure success, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the soil: Rake the soil to remove debris, and aerate it if necessary to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. For bare patches, loosen the soil to a depth of a few centimetres.

  2. Choose the right seed: Select a seed mix suited to your lawn’s needs. For example, fine fescue or ryegrass are good choices, offering durability and a fine texture.

  3. Spread the seed: For an even distribution, use a seed spreader. Be sure to follow the recommended seed rate for your chosen grass type.

  4. Water wisely: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until the grass is established. Water lightly once or twice a day, depending on rainfall.

Improving your existing lawn

If your lawn has areas that have thinned out or look tired after summer, overseeding can help:

  • Mow the lawn: Cut the grass slightly shorter than usual to allow the seeds to reach the soil.

  • Aerate: If your lawn is compacted, aerating will help the seeds penetrate the soil and encourage root growth.

  • Top-dressing: Apply a thin layer of compost or topsoil over the seeds to help them establish and improve soil structure.

Additional lawn improvements

  • Fertilise: Applying a slow-release autumn fertiliser rich in potassium will strengthen your lawn, helping it to survive the winter and green up quickly in spring.

  • Weed and moss control: Autumn is a great time to deal with persistent weeds and moss. Consider applying a lawn treatment designed to target these issues.

Aftercare

Once the new grass has germinated, avoid heavy foot traffic on the lawn until it’s well-established. Continue to water regularly and monitor for any signs of pests or disease, such as fungal infections, which can thrive in cool, damp conditions.

By investing time in your lawn this autumn, you can ensure it stays healthy and vibrant year-round. And with Flourish Landscaping at your side, you can rest easy knowing your lawn is in expert hands.
