Landscaping project – Esher
Full garden transformation with porcelain terrace, integrated drainage works, raised planters and a new driveway.
Project scope
In Esher, we took on a comprehensive landscaping project aimed at transforming an underused area of the garden into a large porcelain patio seating area, while also addressing significant drainage issues and improving the overall aesthetic of both the rear and front gardens.
Description of works
Rear garden
- Construction of a bespoke seating area and installation of over 40 metres of porcelain paving, blending functionality with modern design.
- Raised planters integrated into the wall, providing opportunities for layered planting, with a K-Rend finish to ensure durability and minimise maintenance.
- Comprehensive drainage system installed to address waterlogging across sub-beds and lawns: over 50 tonnes of clay and spoil removed and replaced with stone and 200 metres of perforated drainage pipe, with soakaways strategically positioned to allow water to filter into the water table.
- New planting schemes designed for the shrub beds to provide year-round colour and structure.
Front garden
- New in-and-out driveway built on MOT sub-base with 20mm shingle finish, complemented by metal edging and a brick crossover.
- New boundary wall constructed to enhance security and define the property’s perimeter.
Our approach
Our approach to this Esher landscaping project combined design thinking with practical engineering. We worked closely with the client to understand their vision and requirements, ensuring that every aspect of the project aligned with how they wanted to use the garden day to day.
Through careful planning and execution, we integrated functional elements such as the drainage system and retaining walls with aesthetic features like the porcelain patio and raised planters, creating an outdoor space that is both beautiful and practical. The scale of the drainage work, in particular, was significant: addressing waterlogging properly at the engineering stage meant the finished garden could be enjoyed in all seasons without the recurring lawn and planting problems that come with poor drainage on clay soil.
