Kingston garden transformation

A rear garden in Kingston upon Thames rebuilt around an expansive raised porcelain patio, with built-in planters, redesigned safer steps, timber sleeper edging and a fresh turfed relaxation area — designed, built and planted in-house by Flourish Landscaping.

Objective

The aim was to turn a cramped, unsafe patio into a generous, elevated outdoor living area — making the most of the garden’s footprint, putting safe access first and giving the family a contemporary space to relax and entertain in.

The starting point

This rear garden in Kingston upon Thames had drifted out of shape over the years. Tired paving and patchy lawn competed for space, the planting had no real structure and the boundaries felt exposed rather than enclosed. Generous by London-terrace standards, the plot still did little to draw you outside: there was no clear focal point from the house, and the existing patio sat at an awkward, unsafe level.

Client brief

The owners asked for a brighter, more contemporary garden that worked for everyday family life and the occasional gathering. They wanted it to stay low-maintenance, but not at the expense of greenery and warmth — structure and privacy mattered as much as a smart hard surface.

Design approach

Our response began with zoning. Led by Craig Davis BSc (Hons) Horticulture, our design-and-build team set the garden out around a raised porcelain patio that lifts the main seating area to a usable level and squares up the awkward changes in height. Timber sleeper edging defines generous planting beds — chosen as much for warmth and texture as practicality — while the reshaped lawn restores balance and a clear line of sight from the house, the kind of layout we set out in our contemporary garden style guide.

Materials were chosen to frame the planting rather than dominate it, so greenery stays at the heart of the scheme. The planting itself leans on dependable, year-round performers — evergreen structure to carry the winter, lifted by seasonal colour — so the garden looks considered in every month without demanding constant attention.

Key features

  • Raised porcelain patio. A large porcelain terrace lifted to a usable level — a frost- and stain-resistant, low-maintenance surface for dining and lounging.
  • Built-in planters and sleeper-edged beds. Timber sleeper edging defines generous beds and built-in planters, bringing greenery right up to the seating without losing usable floor space.
  • Redesigned, safer steps. The awkward original steps were rebuilt with even risers and clear sight lines for confident, safe movement between levels.
  • Turfed relaxation area. A fresh, reshaped lawn balances the hard landscaping and gives a soft, family-friendly space for children and quiet evenings.

Construction details

Existing surfaces were lifted and the ground re-levelled to establish clean lines and consistent falls for drainage. The new paving was laid on a reinforced sub-base for long-term stability beneath a raised structure, and the steps were rebuilt with even, predictable risers to make access genuinely safe. Sleeper borders were fixed securely and backfilled with enriched topsoil to give new plants the best possible start — the groundwork we explain in our soil and compost advice — while boundary fencing was repaired and treated for a cohesive backdrop. As APL- and TrustMark-accredited landscapers, every stage was held to the same standard.

Results

The finished garden feels open, balanced and far more inviting. Defined planting zones soften the hard landscaping, the improved proportions make it easy to move through, and the raised patio finally gives the family a safe, sociable place to sit. A tired, piecemeal plot is now a calm extension of the home — suited equally to quiet evenings, informal gatherings and everyday family life. It is the kind of result that sits behind our 5.0 rating across 51 Google reviews.
