Richmond garden transformation – Indian sandstone circle and modern sleeper borders

Objective

This Richmond garden had become tired and underused, with patchy lawn, dated paving and planting that lacked structure or definition. The layout offered little sense of arrival or focal point, and boundaries felt exposed rather than private. Although the space was a reasonable size for a London terrace, it did not function well for either relaxation or entertaining.

Client brief

The homeowners wanted a clean, contemporary garden that felt welcoming and easy to maintain while still retaining warmth and character. They were keen to introduce a strong visual centrepiece and more usable seating space, without over-complicating the design or introducing materials that would age poorly. Budget was sensible rather than extravagant, so choices needed to balance quality with practicality.

Process highlights

Design approach

The design focused on creating a clear focal point and improving circulation through the garden. A circular Indian sandstone feature was introduced to anchor the space visually and break up the rectangular proportions typical of terrace gardens. Surrounding paving was kept simple and neutral so the circle remained the primary design element.

Timber sleeper borders were installed to define planting zones and introduce natural texture. Planting was selected for year-round reliability and colour contrast rather than high maintenance seasonal change, ensuring the garden would remain attractive with minimal upkeep. The intention was to combine modern lines with softer natural materials so the space felt contemporary but not stark.

Construction details

Existing paving and lawn were removed and the ground prepared with a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base to ensure long-term stability. The Indian sandstone circle and surrounding paving were laid on full mortar beds with correct drainage falls. Sleeper borders were securely fixed and filled with enriched topsoil to support healthy plant establishment. Boundary fencing was repaired and treated to create a consistent backdrop for the new planting scheme.

Results

The completed garden now feels structured, brighter and significantly more inviting. The sandstone circle acts as a natural gathering point, while sleeper borders frame the planting and provide visual warmth. Maintenance requirements are low, yet the garden retains interest and definition throughout the year.

What was once an overlooked outdoor space is now used regularly for sitting out and entertaining, demonstrating how a clear focal feature and thoughtful material selection can completely transform a modest London garden without extensive structural alteration.
