Low maintenance family garden – Kingston
Scope
This Kingston garden had the familiar traits of a typical suburban plot: an expanse of worn lawn, dated paving and few defined planting areas. The previous layout lacked clear function, and without focal points or structure the space felt underused despite good size. Hard landscaping dominated while greenery was limited and patchy, making the garden feel both flat and uninspiring.
Client brief
The owners wanted a transformation that would support everyday family life without high upkeep. They were keen for the space to feel brighter, more organised and easier to live with, from morning breakfasts to weekend gatherings. Privacy from neighbouring views was important, alongside durable materials and planting that would reward minimal maintenance with lasting visual appeal.
Description of work
Design approach
- For the low-maintenance family garden project, we began by reconfiguring soil levels to optimise the garden’s structure and layout.
- To ensure durability and stability, we installed closeboard fencing panels supported by concrete retaining gravel boards, providing enhanced security and longevity.
- To introduce greenery and elevate aesthetics, sleeper planters were incorporated with year-round planting, adding visual interest and natural beauty to the space.
- Additionally, we constructed a retaining wall and step-up feature leading from a 50sqm porcelain patio, seamlessly integrated with a comprehensive drainage system for efficient water management, preventing waterlogging and ensuring the longevity of the garden elements.
The new design introduced a cleaner layout with distinct areas tailored for family use and relaxation. A wider, paved terrace immediately outside the home provided a durable all-weather seating area and natural extension of the interior. From here, defined lawn and planting beds were set out to create order and flow without reducing usable space.
Planting was chosen with simplicity in mind, favouring hardy, reliable species that provide structure without constant care. Evergreen shrubs and perennials were mixed to give season-long interest while keeping maintenance demands low. Timber sleepers and contemporary edging materials were used to articulate borders, introduce texture and create a subtle contrast with the paving.
Construction details
Existing surfaces were removed and the site regraded to establish crisp edges and effective drainage. New paving was laid on a compacted base with correct falls for longevity, and sleeper borders were installed with enriched soil to support planting success. Lawn was re-turfed on improved growing medium to enhance establishment and reduce future patchiness. Boundaries were refreshed and treated with finishes that complemented the new palette without overwhelming it.
Results
The completed garden now feels organised, inviting and far easier to maintain. The expanded terrace offers a practical outdoor living space, while planting beds provide greenery and structure without high ongoing care. Defined edges and durable finishes have given the whole space a cohesive, contemporary feel, turning what was once a tired, undefined garden into a low-maintenance family outdoor room that functions beautifully every day.
