Ibiza-inspired entertaining – Kingston

Initial conditions

This Kingston terrace garden had good bones but no sense of purpose. Mixed paving materials had settled unevenly, borders were sparse and privacy from neighbouring windows was minimal. The space felt narrow and fragmented, with no area large enough to comfortably host more than two or three people. Evening use was almost non-existent due to lack of lighting and atmosphere.

Client brief

The owners wanted a garden designed specifically for social use — outdoor dining for eight, relaxed seating and a sense of enclosure without building solid walls. Lighting was important, as most entertaining would happen after work or at weekends. Maintenance needed to stay manageable so the space didn’t become another obligation.

Process highlights

Design approach

Bespoke seating crafted using high-quality Italian porcelain tiles, known for their sleek and durable properties. The seating was finished with a modern render, enhancing its visual appeal and adding a contemporary touch. This combination creates a luxurious and comfortable space for guests to relax, seamlessly blending functionality with elegance.

Hand-built wooden pergola this was installed to provide both shade and architectural interest. This custom-designed structure serves as a stylish focal point and offers a perfect spot for outdoor lounging and socialising. Its natural wood finish complements the garden’s aesthetic, while the design provides shelter and enhances the space’s overall functionality.

Planting scheme – a thoughtfully designed planting scheme was implemented to enhance the garden’s layout and aesthetic appeal. Carefully selected plants, chosen for their textures, colours, and seasonal interest, add layers of beauty and vibrancy to the space. The planting plan complements the modern design elements and creates a lush, inviting environment.

Irrigation system – ensuring the garden remains vibrant and well-maintained with minimal effort, an automatic irrigation system was installed. This system efficiently waters the garden, allowing the plants to thrive without manual watering, thus supporting the low-maintenance goal of the design.

Fencing and security gate Composite slatted fencing and security gate: For enhanced privacy and security, composite slatted fencing was installed around the garden. This modern material offers durability and a sleek appearance. A tongue-and-groove security side gate was also added, providing an extra layer of security while maintaining the garden’s stylish look.

Relaxation area – Drawing inspiration from Ibiza, the garden features a dedicated outdoor relaxation area designed for hosting and entertaining in a relaxed, stylish setting. The space includes comfortable seating, elegant design elements, and an open layout that invites guests to enjoy the garden’s ambience.

The transformation of this Kingston garden resulted in a sophisticated, Ibiza-inspired outdoor entertainment area that combines modern design with practical, low-maintenance features. The high-quality porcelain seating, bespoke pergola, and well-planned planting create a visually appealing and functional space. The automatic irrigation system and durable materials ensure that the garden remains easy to maintain, while the overall design provides an ideal setting for relaxation and social gatherings.

Construction details

Existing surfaces were removed and levels corrected before a reinforced base was poured to support large-format porcelain slabs. Adjustable pedestal supports allowed a perfectly level finish while concealing electrical conduits beneath. Boundary walls were painted in a dark neutral tone to recede visually, and substantial trellis panels were installed for climbers. LED uplights and path lighting were wired through underground ducting to create layered evening illumination.

Results

The garden now functions exactly as intended — a social space used frequently rather than occasionally. The pale paving brightens the entire plot, layered planting provides privacy without heaviness, and integrated lighting extends usability well into the evening. What was once a narrow, underused terrace is now effectively an additional living room during warmer months, supporting regular gatherings without feeling crowded.
